A new piercing, just like a wound, needs to be kept clean and dry. Chlorine from pools and bacteria in oceans, lakes and rivers may cause irritation or contaminate the new piercing and delay healing. It's important to remember that a new piercing is essentially an open pathway for harmful bacteria to enter. It is generally recommended to wait at least 2-3 weeks before swimming and then continue to use sterile saline after thoroughly rinsing with clean water.
